How does Cherry work?

Here’s how it works:

A client completes our 60-second application, undergoing a soft credit check that doesn’t harm their credit score.

The provider receives full payment from Cherry, minus the merchant fee, usually within 2–3 business days.
The client repays Cherry over a set period of time.

Is our practice responsible if customers don’t make payments?

You, as the practice, are not responsible for the repayment of your customers' contracts. We take on the credit risk of every contract initiated through Cherry. This is the difference between in-house financing and third-party financing. With in-house financing, a practice loans money to its customers directly and takes on all responsibility of managing repayment, including the risk if the borrower defaults. With third-party financing, your practice outsources the lending, risk, and repayment process.

Are there monthly, annual, or one-time setup fees?

There is no annual fee, monthly maintenance fee, or setup charge. Cherry offers a quick and easy enrollment process with no hidden costs. Merchant processing fees apply, but they’re up to 50% lower than other financing companies.

What is your average approval rate?

We boast an industry-leading 80%+ approval rate, accommodating a wide range of borrowers. For Pay-in-4 (our 6-week plan), we approve ~90% of applicants.

Does Cherry require a down payment?

Yes. When patients are approved, they’ll make a small down payment using a traditional debit or credit card, such as Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Clients can use any non-prepaid debit card or major credit card to complete their initial payment at checkout.

When using a credit card, a 2.99% processing fee applies, while payments made with a debit card linked to a checking account have no added fee. Please note that prepaid cards, including Cash App cards and gift cards, aren’t accepted. To confirm whether your card is prepaid, look for the word “prepaid” on the card or contact your card issuer directly.

Will you charge an origination fee or a prepayment penalty to our clients?

There are no origination fees, prepayment penalties, deceptive promotional periods, or deferred interest charges you might find with other lenders. Borrowers can make extra monthly payments and pay off their entire loan amount early without incurring any penalties. Late fees of up to $30 may apply for payment more than 10 days late.

What types of pet expenses are eligible for financing?

Cherry can be used to finance a wide range of services and pet needs, from low-cost checkups to more expensive emergency vet visits. Vaccinations, diagnostics, x-rays, teeth cleaning and other dental care, pet daycare, spay and neuter procedures, specialized pet food, prescription pet store items, and even elective treatments can be covered with Cherry Payment Plans. Flexible repayment options are also available for end-of-life services, such as pet euthanasia, helping families manage difficult but compassionate decisions.

Will the application process affect my customers’ credit scores?

We perform a soft credit check during the loan application process to prequalify customers — which means no credit check conducted by Cherry will negatively impact their credit score. At no point do we conduct a hard credit check. This approach offers customers peace of mind, allowing them to explore pet financing options and find the lowest rate possible without fear that it will impact their credit report.

How long does the application and approval process take?

Before or during their vet visit, clients can apply online and receive a decision all within 60 seconds. If approved, they can use their funds immediately.

Can consumers with bad credit access your veterinary financing?

Yes, consumers with good credit, bad credit, and limited credit backgrounds can qualify for financing plans tailored to their individual circumstances. At Cherry, we know that credit history is only a glimpse of a consumer’s financial situation, and with a proprietary underwriting algorithm, we’re able to look beyond outdated markers of financial stability — like debt-to-income ratio and credit score — to accept a wider range of borrowers who may not meet traditional credit approval standards.

Can clients manage their payment plan online?

How are your pet loans different from personal loans?

Unlike a traditional personal loan, Cherry is tailored to pet care and only usable with the specific vet clinic or veterinary hospital that offers it. We offer low interest rates, qualifying 0% APR, simple eligibility requirements, and never conduct a hard credit check.

Are clients with pet health insurance plans eligible?

Yes, even if your clients have pet insurance, they can still use Cherry to cover medical bills, or portions of bills, not fully covered by their pet insurance company — including copays and deductibles.

How are you different from the CareCredit card and Scratchpay?

Unlike CareCredit, we don’t perform hard credit checks or require customers to apply for a physical credit card (like the CareCredit credit card). CareCredit cardholders are also at risk of incurring deferred interest if they don’t pay off their loan in full, on time every month, by the end of the promotional period. Cherry never uses deferred interest. Additionally, we approve nearly twice as many borrowers as CareCredit and have the lowest merchant pricing in the industry. Compared to Scratchpay, we offer 3x higher loan amounts, longer terms, and more customizable repayment plans.

Cherry is also a faster, more reliable alternative to crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe, which do not guarantee full coverage for veterinary care.

How are refunds handled?

Refunds can be initiated within the transaction tab of the Provider Portal by selecting the dropdown of a completed transaction. Full refunds and partial refunds are available to choose from. Transactions that are older than 60 days are ineligible for refunds through the Cherry platform. To initiate a refund outside of the first 60 days, it is up to the practice to facilitate the refund directly with the borrower.

Full Refunds: A full refund cancels the borrower’s contract. The practice receives reimbursement from Cherry for processing fees, and the borrower receives a credit for any remaining balance owed.
Partial Refunds: A partial refund issues a partial credit to the borrower, not to exceed the full remaining balance. Cherry prorates and reimburses the practice’s processing fees. Partial refunds can be performed multiple times and only up to the full remaining balance.
